Therese Ryan
My self-exploration story has been intricately connected to my adoption story.
At the age of five weeks I was adopted from a mother and baby home in Ireland. Searching for my birth family has been the most important journey of my life and the most challenging. The difficulties and obstacles I faced along the way forced me to get to know myself in a whole new way.
It was on this outward and inward journey that I discovered Iyengar yoga and first learned how to bring awareness to my body. I went on to train as a teacher and I’ve been teaching weekly classes since.
The Enneagram is a big part of my life too. Since I came across it first in 2001 I’ve been amazed by how accurately it reflects how we are in the world, and how it can guide us towards a more authentic way of being and also enhance our relationships.
In Focusing I discovered a gentle practice for listening to the wisdom of my body, a means of accepting myself compassionately and lovingly, and a way of knowing what is right for me. I only wish I had found it sooner.
In my work with others, both one to one and in groups, I use the tools that help me day in and day out.
It took me over two decades to find my birth mother. I found myself along the way too. All my life I’ve loved to write and writing my adoption story has been a powerful and healing process. In 2022 the Irish government finally introduced legislation which allows adopted people access to our birth information.
I live in beautiful Sligo in the North West of Ireland.
I can’t imagine my life without yoga. It grounds me, energises me and enhances my life every day. I’m a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and teach classes in Ballymote Co Sligo and Sligo town.
